The chandeliers' story goes a long way, back when the people used these lighting fixtures to brighten up the halls of big and grand mansions for those lucky enough to witness luxurious evening parties. In the past these illuminations were made of two wooden logs nailed as one to form a cross, wherein the candles were put across the flat wooden surface. Chains made of iron are connected afterwards at the middle and the ends of the cross and then mounted on the hall's ceiling. Crude as it is compared to what modern chandeliers look like now, these "chandelbrum" as it was called then were exclusively displayed in houses for the powerful and the dignified people. Nowadays though, modern chandeliers do not choose their homes. As long as one has enough space to accommodate these fixtures and ample budget to buy chandeliers of their own preference, everyone could have this beautiful and grand lighting in their homes. However, chandeliers, in fact, have a lot of stories to tell and have plenty of enduring tales to share. One of these is the story of how from a crude-looking wooden furniture these chandeliers used to have now become one of the greatest masterpieces in stately homes and large halls. The name chandelier can be traced back to the Latin etymology of "candela" meaning candles. The earliest pictures of these mounted fixtures were that of a wooden cross with spikes at all ends from where candles were placed. Not really a very pleasing-looking source of light but it served as able illuminations especially to medieval churches and convents. The height of the chandeliers was in the 17th century. However, prior to that time chandeliers have already taken a more sophisticated design. Crystals were used to hold the candles, and brass or iron has been used instead of the wood. One of the popular finds of 15th-century chandeliers was that in that Jewish synagogue in Mattancherry. It was supposed to be made by Belgian craftsmen and have used Chinese tiles. But it was due to the celebrated glass cutter Josef Palme who started a workshop school in 1724 that produced large quantities of chandeliers. These crystal chandeliers became a much-sought decorating piece in the whole of Europe, but only for the nobles and the rich. Indeed, it became a sign of prestige and wealth. In the 19th century to the 20th century, everyone also witnessed the production of "gasolier", a merge of gas and a chandelier, and the electricity powered modern chandeliers we now have today. Certainly, chandeliers are one of the most enduring and ageless ornamental pieces man has made and still continues to bright up houses of all shapes and styles. Chandeliers are usually embellished or elaborate lamps which can be used for ceiling lighting. Generally, chandeliers are centrepieces within huge halls, public galleries hotels, churches, palaces, mansions, etc. Standard residential homes also have affordable chandeliers in the living room which are simpler versions of the chandeliers. Those found in residences are often not as lavish as the styles in public and commercial buildings. Chandeliers can be lit with a candle or incandescent lights, materials used also by energy saving light bulbs. The vintage and traditional kind of chandeliers use candle lights or even incandescent lights for illumination and even have yellow coloured illumination. Even as modern chandeliers come with fluorescent lights or that of LED, and they give bright white luminescence. Illuminating chandeliers by using candle lights is not practically feasible on a daily basis, hence, modern chandeliers have got electric light bulbs that can be created to appear like candle lights. Multiple sorts of chandeliers are described below. Crystal Chandeliers: The most expensive and luxurious chandeliers are made of crystals. With French furniture as your new passion in furniture and home décor, you are no doubt interested in learning some of the histories of this unique and classic style. We consider French furniture to be the finest of the “fine wines” in furniture styles, and its rich history definitely backs up that claim. Let’s take a look at the evolution of French furniture from the middle ages to present-day. It’s quite a fascinating little ride! French Furniture in Medieval Times – 10th - 15th CenturiesThe French furniture of this time directly addressed people’s core needs. In order to shoe away from the cold weather, the people of this time would hang robust and warm draperies on their walls. Most of the French furniture was big and simple. The furniture was mostly made of Oak because of the woods heavyweight – thieves were very common in this time, and the weight of the furniture made it difficult to steal. Another important aspect of this era was the deep and intricate hand carving in much of the furniture. The Renaissance Period – 1515 - 1560During this period of history, the skilled French craftsman produced furniture with beautifully carved designs that echoed the Roman stylings of the time. Many of the hand-crafted cabinets would make to look like buildings, with ornate columns and panels. Louis XIII – 1560 - 1643This is when the French country furniture era started. The pieces from this era reflect a “city life”, but were crafted for county living. Louis XIV – 1643 - 1715The styles of this era reflect luxury. Very heavy carving was popular at this time, including lions, shells, golden leaves, and the sun. The Time of Regence – 1715 - 1723Mythological themes from the Orient were the style of this time. Regence French furniture is a still at the top of the list for many collectors. Louis XV – 1723 - 1774This was the time that the Martin brothers emerged as innovators. The ornamentation of the Regence time was taken to the next extreme through the use of many extravagancies. Louis XVI – 1774 - 1792In this period, eagles, ram’s heads, and dolphins were commonly integrated into the furniture. Also, this was when chairs started to be produced for decorative functions. Directoire Style – 1793 - 1804This was the time that Egyptian motifs first emerged in French furniture. It became common to include detailed carvings of sphinxes on beautiful bronze hardware. French Empire – 1804 - 1814During the time of Napoleon, French furniture was crafted from heavy very woods (mostly ebony and mahogany) and finished with deep and rich dark finishes. Marble tops started to become very popular, and the Egyptian motifs continued from the previous era. Restoration Period – 1814 - 1830After the fall of Napoleon began the “softer” version of the previously mentioned Empire stylings. French furniture makers of the time starting using whimsical and fantasy-based stylings, although they continued to incorporate robust geometry into the furniture. Louis Phillipe – 1830 -1848This era sparked the creation of furniture that was in line with the Industrial Revolution. Through more “mass-production” practices, the stylings of the furniture were a bit simpler than previous eras – but it was also very attractive and functional. As you can see, the history of French furniture is as rich as the beautiful French mahogany end table sitting in your living room. When you continue to dive deeper into the hundreds of years of styles and craftsmanship, we’re sure your collection of fine French furniture will keep growing.

For only a couple of hundred pounds, you can adorn your garden in a way that will make your neighbors jealous and your family look forward to hours in the garden. But a fire pit can be an eye-sore, and some communities don’t allow them at all. Whether metal or clay, the right chiminea incorporated into your garden can bring hours of family bonding time, while also providing a beautiful showpiece for your garden. 2. Antiqued garden tools. Antique-looking shovels, hoes, and other hand tools can be hung on fences or strategically placed throughout your garden. These are beautiful accent pieces that will really tie your garden together. 3. Bird baths. Smaller ones can be hung from trees or larger ones placed on the ground throughout your garden. Not only are they attractive and homey, but they are great when the little birds start utilizing them. Just make sure to always try to keep the baths filled with fresh water!

It’s an absolute staple in the world of garden ornaments that you’ll want to incorporate this year. 6. Citronella tiki torches. While he may have been career-challenged and romantically inept – and stuck living with his parents on too many occasions – his one true love was velvet. In fact, in the ever-popular series he was often quoted as saying that he would, “drape himself in velvet if it were socially acceptable.” That seemed pretty ridiculous until the episode entitled “The Doodle” where he covered himself in velvet from head to toe and carried on in public! While your love for velvet might not reach the epic proportions of George Constanza’s (or maybe it does!), you have probably been considering getting on board with the newest trends in crushed velvet beds. A crushed velvet bed brings an element of lushness and glamour into your bedroom décor while also surrounding you – whether as an upholstered headboard/footboard or the entire frame – in one of the softest fabrics produced. Sleeping (or even just watching television) in a crushed velvet bed will make you feel like royalty – with all of the lavishness of the fabric cascading around you. There are about sixteen types of velvet used in tapestries and upholsteries throughout the world – both natural and synthetic in nature. Some of these include such velvets as: · Mirror velvet · Embossed velvet · Chiffon (sometimes known as “transparent”) velvet · Cisele velvet · Lyons velvet · Hammered velvet
Crushed velvet, however – at least in our opinion – is one of the most decadent velvets produced. Crushed velvet is painstakingly fashioned by pushing its fabric in several varying directions – often done mechanically while the fabric is still wet. The unique production technique of crushed velvet gives its appearance and texture a very lustrous and inviting feel – which, when incorporated into your bedroom set, is a velvet lover's dream come true.
Expertly hand carved from natural mahogany comes this delightful antique French style bed. Finished in a silver and featuring distinguished ornate detailing with a decorated Crushed velvet fabric buttoned headboard and footboard, this bed is ideal to add a touch of elegance and style in your bedroom today. https://www.homesdirect365.co.uk/silver-antique-french-style-crushed-velvet-bed-p40525
With a stunning Crushed Velvet fabric on the front and back of the headboard, this bed is ideal as a focal point in a variety of bedroom settings. Handcrafted from natural materials, this bed will impress across generations. https://www.homesdirect365.co.uk/estelle-antique-french-style-bed-p40465 Another benefit of crushed velvet is that it is a very heavy and durable fabric. It’s quite simple to clean. Most of the time you’ll just want to lightly dust the fabric off, however, heavier stains do require some warm water and a touch of soap or detergent. But beyond the functionality of crushed velvet is the way it will make you feel. Your first time lying down in your new crushed velvet bed will make you feel like you are floating on air, surrounded by a beautiful piece of furniture that is uniquely yours. When your friends come to visit and you’re giving them the updated tour of your house, you won’t want to wait to wait to show off your new crushed velvet bed. Your best friend’s look of envy will quickly remind you that you made the right purchase. While you may have spent the majority of your life in a more traditional type of bed, an investment in a crushed velvet bed will bring you luxury and decadence for decades to come. It is an investment that will pay you back with lavishness every single night you head to bed. Homes Direct 365 are not going to claim that getting on board with the trend of crushed velvet beds is going to completely change your life. But we are quite sure it is going to change your nights.
